Cyprus Anti-Doping Authority and the Greek General Secretariat for Sports join forces

The Cyprus Anti-Doping Authority (CyADA) and the Greek General Secretariat for Sports have forged a cooperation to deal with doping issues in Cyprus and Greece, but also on an international level.

The collaboration between the two authorities, which has intensified in recent years, was sealed with the official visit of the Greek Secretary General for Sports Mr Ioulios Synadinos to Cyprus and the CyADA offices, accompanied by special advisor for the General Secretariat for Sports and member of the Greek National Anti-Doping Organisation (ESKAN) Mr Alexandros Adamides.

During the visit to CyADA on Friday, 21st July, issues of common interest between CyADA, the Greek General Secretariat for Sports and ESKAN were discussed, as well as the potential of common actions to be taken.

Following the meeting, CyADA president Dr Michael Petrou said the following:

“I have repeatedly stated that the field of sports in Cyprus and Greece are like communicating vessels and we are particularly interested in cooperating with the Greek sports authorities. Greece has made some significant steps towards restructuring the anti-doping system and we congratulate them on that. We believe that through this collaboration we can become more effective in our fight against doping.”

The upcoming visit in November 2017 of the Monitoring Group of the Anti-Doping Convention of the Council of Europe to Greece with the participation of representatives of the World Anti-Doping Agency, was also discussed during the meeting.

On his part, Greek Secretary General for Sports Mr Ioulios Synadinos said: “The cooperation of the two national anti-doping authorities is a significant part of the fight against the scourge on modern sports. The experience and expertise of the head of the Cypriot organisation Dr Michael Petrou play an important role in this effort. Sectors such as testing, sample analysis in the Greek laboratory, information sharing, harmonisation and prevention, are already main fields of cooperation.”
